Objectives

This module outlines the key injury management and treatment principles and the implications for allied health providers with the aim of enhancing effectiveness of treatment with a particular focus on successful work outcomes following a workplace injury.

The basis for the information in this module is the Clinical Framework for the Delivery of Health Services[1] (the clinical framework). The clinical framework was developed by the Transport Accident Commission and WorkSafe Victoria and is supported by the majority of compensable jurisdictions in Australia, and many peak industry bodies and associations. These include the Australian Physiotherapy Association, the Australian Psychological Society, the Chiropractors Association of Australia, the Australian Osteopathic Association, the Chiropractic and Osteopathic College of Australasia and Occupational Therapy Australia. The Clinical Framework reflects the most contemporary approach to treatment incorporating developments in evidence based practice and use of objective outcomes.

Additional information and resources are referred to where WorkCover has determined the information may assist you to treat workers with a workplace injury. The additional information has been incorporated and presented under the five key principles outlined in the clinical framework.

At the completion of Module 2 you should be able to:

  • discuss the importance of outcome measures to demonstrate treatment effectiveness
  • discuss the use of outcome measures related to the functional goals of therapy
  • describe the flags model for identifying risk factors that may influence a worker’s health and recovery
  • apply resources to assist in identifying risk factors and communicate the findings with the support team
  • apply key strategies to empower a worker to manage their injury
  • communicate key messages for workers experiencing pain and psychological distress
  • develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed) goals and effectively communicate them with the support team
  • apply an evidence based and active approach to treatment
